setters:
There are several distinct breeds of setters. They are the
English Setter, the Irish or red setter, the Gordon setter, and the Red and
White setter. The Setters used to "set" when on point.
They would drop or set when they came in contact with birds. The modern setter stands up on point.
The setter often points with a high tail and front foot lifted and it's
head pointed towards the game it scents. Nose, intelligence, conformation
and trainability are the top criteria for a good setter. The setters are used
primarily for hunting upland birds. The coat is medium to long. The
setters have gentle dispositions and love people.
The
colors of the english setter are white, with black, tan, chestnut, or orange spots and ticking. The average
english setter weighs about 60 lbs. and is 24 inches tall at the
shoulder. The english setter is from England. There are show strains or bench types of english setters
with longer coats and larger frames. And there are also hunting or field
types of english setters, with a medium coat length and a quicker movement of
carriage and stronger hunting instincts.
The coat of the Irish or red setter: is
deep mahogany red. Irish setters were bred in the Emerald Isles in the 18th century.
The irish setters are used for hunting
upland game and in the show ring. They are pointing dogs. The coat is
long and straight with fringes, and
the colors are deep chestnut red or rich mahogany. The average size is
26" high and the weight is 65 lbs.
Gordon setter:
The gordon setters history can be traced back to Scotland. It is
named after the Duke of Gordon. The gordon setter is the largest and the
strongest of the setters. The gordon hunts slowly and
methodically. The coat is medium to long, The
colors are black with tan markings on face, chest and feet. The average gordon
setter weighs about 65 lbs. and is 26 inches tall at the
shoulder. There are show strains of gordon setters
with longer coats and larger frames.
Red and White Setters:
The
Irish Red and White setter dates back to the 14th century.
It is a medium sized dog with a white
coat with patches of chestnut red over its body. Red flecking can occur
over the nose and the bottom of the front and back legs.
The dog must have red markings over both eyes and ears and a
chestnut patch on the top of the tail, it may have more body patches. The
average red and white is 25 inches tall and weighs 60 lbs.
